The Science of Sleep
We go through 5 different stages during sleep: stage 1,2,3,4 (Non-REM) and 5 (REM). This cycle repeats itself through the night every 90-110 minutes.6
Stage 1 – Light sleep
During this stage we are half awake and asleep and can be woken up easily. Muscle activity slows down and a slight twitching may occur.
Stage 2 – True Sleep
After 10 minutes of light sleep, we enter True Sleep which lasts approximately 20 minutes. Our breathing and heart rate slows down, body temperature decreases slightly and our brain waves become slower.
Stage 3 – Deep Sleep
Deep Sleep begins, and our breathing and heart rate are at their lowest levels.
Stage 4 – Very Deep Sleep
Very Deep Sleep occurs with slow rhythmic breathing and no eye movement or muscle activity.
Stage 5 – REM
During Rapid Eye Movement, our eyes move rapidly, brain waves speed up and dreaming occurs. Muscles relax and heart rate increases. Breathing is rapid and shallow.
