Treatments for Insomnia

Making simple lifestyle changes can relieve insomnia. Sleep hygiene tips are often highly effective and medication may not be required. It could be as straightforward as purchasing an appropriate pillow or eliminating that 3pm coffee. If somebody is experiencing a difficult period due to work stress or a relationship breakdown, then counselling may ease some emotional strain, making sleep easier. Alternatively, adopting relaxation techniques such as meditation may help ease the mind.

Antihistamines are the strongest non-prescription option available over the counter at pharmacies. Antihistamines affect the central nervous system, increasing feelings of sleepiness. The effectiveness of these agents may decrease over time and the incidence of grogginess the following day can be a problem if driving or operating machinery.2

Anti-histamines and herbal remedies may interact with other medications, so it’s important to find out if other medications are being used , or encourage them to see their doctor.
